Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

Bruxism is the tendency to put excess pressure on the teeth by clenching or grinding. Most patients are totally unaware of this habit but wear patterns and gum recession are signs which can be evaluated by the dentist. The heaviest forces occur at night during the dream cycles when you are in a very deep sleep. The stress and tension in your life often correlate with the amount of bruxism and its intensity and resultant damage. The excess pressures can wear away the natural tooth enamel; cause chipping or fractures of teeth or restorations, cause sore muscles, teeth, and joints; may lead to joint damage; and may accelerate existing gum disease.

Although there is no cure for bruxism at this time, its effects can often be controlled. A bite guard (night guard, occlusal guard) appliance is often recommended for use on a long term basis. The guard is worn mainly during your sleep but can be worn during the day if you experience pain or muscle tension. This appliance is made of a durable plastic material, covers the upper teeth and provides a smooth surface on which the lower teeth can rest, keeping the teeth apart. The appliance will cover over irregularities in the bite allowing the muscles to relax and establishing harmony between the teeth, muscles, and joints. The plastic will wear instead of the tooth enamel or the restoration surface. The bite guards usually will last 5-10 years, given proper care.
